Hermione walked down the corridor, her arms were cradling a large pile of books which she had loaned from the library. She smiled, glad to be back after the long summer break. She'd missed out on alot. She tried to read the back cover of the first book on top of the pile, but it was upside down. She sighed impatiently and turned around a bend, when she paused and looked over her shoulder, something was telling her she was being followed. She shrugged and carried on walking.

There was never any student so glad to be back at Hogwarts as Harry Potter. It wasn’t just six weeks away from his friends, from Quidditch, from school, but rather six weeks with the Dursleys, who had never even acknowledged him, let alone shown any sign that they related to the boy who had inhabited their cupboard under the stairs for nigh on eleven years. He had been rescued, of course, before the time was up, by none other than Dumbledore, but, considering at least 90% of his summer holiday had been spent festering in his bedroom, Harry wasn’t entirely sure that he had gotten the most out of his break. Indeed, spotting the bushy head of hair that belonged to his best friend bobbing up and down ahead of him caused a grin to break out onto his face that was far wider than any that had tugged at his lips over the summer.
“Hermione! Hey, HERMIONE!”
Harry’s half-shout that bounced off the voices of the few other students in the corridor attracted a few curious glances. Despite his protests to Snape, it appeared that wherever he went, Harry somehow managed to draw attention to himself, albeit unintentionally. He shot a sheepish glance around at his peers. The stares with which they steadily regarded him in return were not so different from the disgusted looks they had shot him last term, though replaced with a sparkle of admiration in lieu of the propaganda laid out by the Ministry against him last year.
Somehow, this was even worse.
He tried to push it to the back of his mind, increasing his pace until he had broke out into a steady jog. Gently, he bumped Hermione’s shoulder companionably as he joined her side. “Hey! Where have you been? Wait.. don’t answer that,” He teased, shooting a pointed look at the pile of books in her grasp. Somethings never changed. That much he was grateful for.

Hermione turned her head and waited when she saw Harry running towards her. "oh, hey Harry," she smiled guiltily at the amount of books she was carrying. She must look rediculous, and on the first day back too. Still, sh needed to get back into it. "how was your summer? I hope they treated you alright this time " She looked at him, slightly worried. She hated leaving him with the Dursleys. They were horrid people. She juggled the books slightly as one almost slipped from her grasp. She caught it quickly on her knee and placed it at the top of the pile.

Only Hermione could have picked up such a substantial amount of books on only the first day back. It must have been some kind of record. Harry’s eyes roamed across the rather thick spines of the tomes she clutched, all declaring a title that he had never even heard of, much less intended to read. He wouldn’t have been surprised if his friend had already worked her way through the reading list for seventh year as well, all the way back in second year or something. In all the six years that he had known Hermione, her arms had always been coiled around at least one massive book, if not more. It was just another quirk of Hermione Granger that Harry had grown to adore over the time he had counted her as a friend.
He shrugged when she brought up the Dursleys. Just the fact that someone was taking an interest in his well-being whilst he lived with his Muggle family was enough to almost make him forget their unfair treatment of him, though in recent years it had admittedly improved somewhat. Harry supposed it had all began with his encounter with the Dementor with Dudley at his side. They would never admit it, but it was plainly obvious that they were intimidated by Harry when he had a wand in his hand and five years of magical schooling behind him. Not that it particularly bothered him.
“Oh, you know. Same old. This summer they’ve been pretty much ignoring me, but I’m not complaining. I’ve been hiding out in my room pretty much all holiday, counting down the days, as usual. I told you that Dumbledore pretty much rescued me, yeah? You should’ve seen the look on their faces when-” Harry’s utterance was cut short as a book began to tumble from the pile in Hermione’s arms. He jerked forward to grab it, but she got there before him and managed to avert a minor crisis. All the same, Harry held out his hands to take the books from her.
“Here, let me.” He smiled, setting them into his own arms in a precarious tower. His eyes focused heavily on the top tome, almost daring it to try and jump off. “What about you? Go anywhere nice?” Harry ventured. Talking about such things wasn’t exactly his forte; after all, it wasn’t as though he had anything to compare them to.

Hermione paused and smiled at Harry as they split the pile of books equally between them. "I think it's obsurd that Dumbledor is even allowingyou to stay there, it's far to dangerous, and well..." she trailed off. "I just think you'd be much better off here rather than there, or at least spend it with either me or Ron next year." she looked at him worriedly. "And Harry please be careful. Whilst I was at Ron's the ministry weren't happy about the dementors entering the muggle world. They think something's going to happen."

The pair fell into a steady rhythm as they walked through the corridors, marred ever so slightly by the substantial pile of books that both Gryffindors now clutched. Returning to Hogwarts was all well and good, but when his friends were nowhere in sight, the castle was no better than being with the Dursleys, in Harry’s opinion. And that much he could say with great authority, having suffered through the clutches of the Dursley family for more than half of his life. Seeing Hermione had caused his spirits to soar. Harry wasn’t exactly the best at looking on the bright side of life, but with the lack of his rock, his Godfather who had been murdered mere months ago, he realised that he had to pick himself up. If the wizarding world wanted to call him their Chosen One, then he may as well give the reason to.
Harry gave his friend an exasperated smile. She was always the voice of reason in his life, Dumbledore's genius pipped ever so slightly by Hermione's pure, unadulterated logic. Still, there was no denying it could get slightly tiresome occasionally. He shrugged. "I'm fine, 'Mione. Promise. I've survived there for the past fifteen years of my life. One more won't hurt. After that, I'll be able to put it all behind me. Dumbledore's never been wrong before, has he?"
Forcing a smile, Harry made a point of adding a further spring to his step. He was determined not spend the entire year jumping down everybody's throats as he had last year, but matters were not entirely helped by one small factor. The faintest hints of a frown tugged forcefully onto his eyebrows. He hoisted them back upwards and tried to keep the edge out of his voice. "You were at the Burrow? How long for? I.. I didn't know. I never got a letter."
And he didn't even have Dobby to blame it on this time.

Hermione stared at Harry blankly. Something was wrong. She knew he was not telling her something but she couldn't force him to etiher. "Harry, I have known you for six years, and I know when you're /not/ fine," she looked at him before deciding to change the subject. She shrugged. "My parents decided to go away for a couple of weeks. I wasn't particularly bothered about going." she smiled. "So Mrs Weasley said I could go stay with them," she smiled.

The euphoric mood that had cushioned the pair of them and tied the friends together, sealed with a tight knot of trust, had all but evaporated from the scenario, drifting up far into the air and beyond the reach of Harry’s fingertips. The annoyance that was increasingly obvious in his eyes urged him not to leap up and make the effort to grab it. What was the point? His temper was a ticking time-bomb and doing so would only delay the inevitable. Hermione was right, as usual, in that something was wrong. He just didn’t want to divulge the doubts and worries that had embedded themselves in his mind like tiny jewels.
Sirius had left him and apparently his friends were as well. Harry pursed his lips and stared ahead. Even if they had asked him to stay with them over the holidays, he would have declined, but that was beside the point. In the Muggle world, he had nothing. He had no proper family, no friends, nothing going for him. All he could rely on was his contacts in the wizarding world and hope. Hope that he would make it back to Hogwarts on September 1st that year without a hitch. Over the course of his six weeks worth of holiday, both of those had slowly ebbed away until the so-called Chosen One was left wallowing in his own misery and dirty laundry in his tiny bedroom at Number Four, Privet Drive.
Harry brushed past that comment without one of his own. It was only the first day of term; he wasn’t going to go jumping down peoples’ throats, much less Hermione’s, if he could help it. He swallowed hard. “Cool. What did you guys do?” Was that too probing? He hadn’t meant to sound as though he were hinting at anything. His emerald eyes widened slightly. “I mean, I didn’t really do much, ‘til Dumbledore showed. I don’t think I’m meant to say anything, but..” A deep breath. A lump was suddenly lodged in his throat, popping up out of nowhere. The voice he continued with was small. “I inherited Grimmauld Place. From Snuffles, I mean. We went last week.”
It still hurt to talk about it. Whenever he closed his eyes, whenever anyone brought up the subject of his Godfather, Harry could see Sirius floating back through the Veil. He averted his eyes and waited. Surely Hermione would understand.

Hermione flushed, a little embarrased when he asked about what she got up to. "Erm, we didn't 'get up to' much, mostly just helping around the house." she said, smiling. It wasw true, they hadn't. In fact Hermione had mainly helped Mrs Weasley around the house. She looked at Harry with saddened eyes. "Oh Harry..." she didn't quite know what to say when he spoke of Grimmauld Place and Snuffles. She linked his arm sympathetically. "Harry you simply /can't/ keep this stuff to yourself," she looked at him worriedly. "It's doing you absolutley no good at all.." As much as she hated to admit it, Harry looked a mess. He looked even thinner than the last time when he went home. "What are you going to do with Grimmauld Place?" she asked quietly. She knew it was difficult for him, she couldn't begin to imagine how difficult it was. She knew that Harry had taken Sirius' death hard, and she knew he probably wouldn't get over it.

The light blush that tinged Hermione’s cheeks following his question did not go unnoticed. Harry might have been completely rubbish when it came to romantic matters of his own (the infuriating monster that had made itself quite at home in the pit of his stomach lately still refused to vacate the area), but one had to live completely under a rock to ignore what had slowly but surely been rising between his two best friends. Everyone but those two could see it, apparently. Harry refused to get involved. He had learnt the hard way that getting involved in the affairs of Ron and Hermione, be it positive or negative, was most certainly never a very good idea. He was hardly the master at picking his own battles and all that, but he wasn’t that dense.
He was, however, slightly blunt when it came to feelings. His mood softened slightly as he felt Hermione’s warm arm loop through his. Harry face dropped slightly, only to scrunch up again in concentration as he shifted the books over to one side so that he could squeeze his friend’s arm affectionately with his own. The action was a simple one, but it said more for the both of them than he thought that he could ever manage to say. “Dumbledore doesn’t think so,” Harry mumbled, rather stiffly. “He never said it, but I know he wants me to keep it a secret. He has some reason for it, I ‘spose. He always does. Never turned out to be wrong, did he?”
His attempt at optimism was a feeble one. Harry wanted to believe in Dumbledore so badly; he did believe in him. But where Sirius was concerned, it was a sore subject and anything that made him feel worse.. well, Harry was inclined now to take too kindly to. He sucked a deep breath in through his teeth and pressed on.
“I dunno. May as well just carry on letting them use it for the.. you know. The headquarters and that. As soon as I’m seventeen, I’m leaving the Dursleys, too, so I reckon I’ll live there for a while. I ‘spose.” The words which left his mouth were more like a stream of unconscious thought than something meaningful, but it was more than he had spoken on the topic in a long time, if ever, and he found that, once the floodgates had opened, there was no going back.

Hermione bit her lip. She knew things had been difficult for Harry recently. "what about Kreacher, are you still going to keep him?" she asked as they took a left turn and waited for one of the staircases to move into position so that they could carry on. The loud churning noise made her look up as one of them moved across and clicked back into place infront of them. She thought about Kreacher for a second while she waited for Harry to reply. He hadn't liked her much, he'd made that pretty clear, but then again, so had the painting that had hung on the wall.

Of all the things that had been lingering on his mind lately, Kreacher was the last. In fact, Harry doubted that he had even shown up on the radar. The house elf seemed so insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but he realised now that he belonged to Harry. He pursed his lips. Of all the things in the world to be reflecting on, it seemed silly that the house elf was one of them. He almost laughed, humourlessly, of course, but stopped himself with the thought that Hermione probably already thought he had gone a bit mental over the summer.
Harry shrugged. “Yeah, I reckon so. I doubt he’d leave that house, anyway. He loves Snuffles’ Mum too much to leave and besides, he’ll keep it habitable for the Order and stuff. Might as well get some use out it, I ‘spose.” He stared purposely ahead at the moving staircases, eyes narrowing as he tried to work out which could land in front of them. It was something that he had done ever since he had first got caught on one that had roared off in the complete opposite direction to that which he had wanted to head. Old habits die hard, he mused.
Of course, the little guessing game that he had in part concocted for himself had lost its glamour slightly, namely because Harry had worked out there was an ever so slight pattern to the movement of the staircases. The circle that they took was a wide one and a student would have had to stand there staring at them for at least an hour to watch the routine come around again, but it was there all the same.
As such, when one finally came around, Harry was the first to hop on it, already realising that it was the one he, at the very least, desired. He leant almost casually against the banister -- that was the air he hoped to achieve, at least -- and turned back to Hermione. “Don’t suppose you’re in the mood for lunch, huh? I bet Ron’s down there already.”

"Oh don't even mention the word to me again," she said, rolling her eyes. "Yesterday Parkinson decided to throw abuse at me and Ron at lunch before starting a food fight." she rolled her eyes remembering the hideous ordeal. "She called me a well, mudblood, and Ron almost went on a rampage, Val'Lauren deducted twenty points from Gryffindor for it," she looked down miserably. She hated having points deducted from their house. "I dread to think what he told the teachers." she shook her head and sighed. She was hungry though. "But I suppose it /can't/ happen twice in one week, can it?" she asked, looking at Harry.
